There’s no substitute for the health benefits you get when you consume the daily recommended amount of fruits and vegetables. But a recent analysis of clinical research shows that there is an antioxidant benefit in supporting your diet with a plant-based, multivitamin/multimineral/phytonutrient supplement.
An analysis co-authored by Amway scientist Jina Hong, Ph.D., of six different research studies showed that plant-based multivitamins/multiminerals, like Nutrilite™ Double X™, have an antioxidant effect, which supports optimal health.* The results were published in the March issue1 of Nutrients, a peer reviewed journal.
Antioxidants and oxidants: It’s all about balance
Why is antioxidant effect important? A balance of antioxidants and oxidants helps support optimal health. External sources like pollution, excessive sun or a poor diet heavy with fried foods can threaten that balance with too many oxidants. That imbalance can cause oxidative stress, which can damage healthy cells.
Fruits and vegetables provide nutrients that support your body’s natural antioxidant mechanism. And now the meta-analysis shows that plant-based multivitamins, like Nutrilite Double X, provide antioxidant benefits, too.
“Double X provides vitamins, minerals, and plant nutrients that have a positive impact on oxidative stress, which is essential for supporting optimal health*,” said Jina Hong, a principal research scientist and clinical investigator for Nutrilite products with a Ph.D. in nutrition and molecular biology.

Studies included more than 800 people
The six randomized, controlled trials in the analysis involved various formulas of Double X multivitamin supplement and included more than 800 healthy adults from different regions of the world with habitually low intakes of fruits and vegetables.
“This meta-analysis of the results of those trials showed that there was a slight difference in the intake effect by race and region, but it statistically showed a positive antioxidant effect in the body after the intake,” Hong said.
Meta-analysis is a recognized research process that uses statistical methods to merge and analyze data from smaller, independent studies to get a larger sample size.
“Generally, it would be difficult for research on health functional foods like supplements to produce statistically meaningful results because most sample groups are small, covering less than 100 research participants,” Hong said. “However, in this meta-analysis, the sample group increased to more than 800 people from six countries. Research that collects and analyzes the results of different studies conducted in different countries on different product formulas produced by one company is extremely rare in the dietary supplement industry.”
Nutrilite Double X multivitamin based on 80+ years of phytonutrient research
In addition to 12 essential vitamins and 10 essential minerals, the current formula of Double X has phytonutrients from 22 different plant concentrates from all five color groups, especially the blue and purple group, which research shows is the least consumed by people across the world. It is the result of more than 80 years of continual research and investment in the study of plant nutrients to support optimal health that began with Nutrilite founder Carl Rehnborg.
While living and working in China in the 1920s during his pre-Nutrilite days, Rehnborg noticed how people living in rural communities with diets heavy in the easily accessible fresh fruits and vegetables compared to city dwellers with different diets. He theorized that plants must contain yet to-be-discovered compounds important for supporting optimal health.
We now know those compounds are phytonutrients, and they give fruits and vegetables their vibrant colors and are believed to deliver antioxidant benefits. The current formula of Double X also includes PhytoProtect™, a patented2 blend of rosemary, turmeric and fava d’anta extracts.
While the antioxidant-rich phytonutrients from each ingredient are beneficial individually, Nutrilite researchers discovered in lab tests that the free-radical fighting power of the three extracts was better when they are combined in a specific ratio.
Research continues on benefits of Nutrilite Double X Multivitamin
Nutrilite scientists will continue to research how plant nutrients may help benefit optimal health, Hong said, including promising findings in one study conducted in Korea.
“It shows that people who consume low levels of fruits and vegetables improved antioxidant capacity through suppression of oxidative damage to DNA by consuming the Korea Double X compared to a placebo,” she said.
SP Foong, Nutrilite brand manager for Amway, said the company is all about helping people live better lives.
“For Double X, we strive to have a positive impact on nutrition and optimal health,” she said. “Therefore, it is our on-going quest to discover new research and botanical ingredients that deliver safe, pure and effective benefits.”
